“Let’s Simplify” was the official theme for CSS Corp’s flagship event #OneWorld15 The unofficial theme for the event was the Internet of Things (IoT). “Automated support in the IoT era” was the buzz word at the event.

Let’s talk IoT

There's not a day that goes by without reading IoT on my news feed. “Internet of Things” is one of the fastest growing areas of technology today. And yes, you are not in the race if you aren’t talking about IoT. The term “Internet of Things” was coined by British entrepreneur Kevin Ashton in 1999.

So what is Internet of Things?

IoT is the interconnection of computing devices embedded in everyday objects via the Internet, enabling them to send and receive data. Smart systems and IoT are driven by combination of sensors, connectivity, people & processes, security and more. In the world of IoT, there are three ways to connect: Human-to-Human, Human-to-Device and Device-to-Device via wireless technologies.

For instance in case of Smart Homes, on a cold winter evening on your way back from work, you could get the heating system of your house started and enter a warm, cosy house; or you could monitor and control what your kids are watching on television or computer while you are hundred miles away for a business meeting. IoT is set to revolutionise the way we are connected.

A new report from Parks Associates finds that smart home devices will prompt over 7 million support requests this year, with adoption at 16% of U.S. broadband households and nearly 40% planning to buy a smart home product in the next 12 months. By 2019, the number of support requests will reach nearly 11 million.

According to Gartner, Inc., there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020, in which time product and service suppliers will generate revenue in excess of $300 billion.

There are numerous set of challenges and opportunities for businesses and consumers. Certainly, there are a lot of complexities around the “Internet of things” and how it is transforming our world. But let’s look at the brighter side of it.

The below presentation covers 30 mind-blowing statistics which highlights the market estimates and the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the next five to ten years.
